Human Rights
Human rights has become an increasingly important frame for understanding development, governance, and social progress. At IDRAC, we recognise that rights-based thinking now shapes how governments, civil society organisations, courts, and communities articulate and pursue goals around equality, justice, and accountability. For many working in development, law, journalism, education, and public service, a working knowledge of human rights is no longer optional. It informs how programmes are designed, how policies are evaluated, and how communities organise around their needs
We engage with human rights as a practical discipline. This means helping development practitioners, government officials, and civil society actors understand the relevant frameworks, conventions, and mechanisms that apply to their work, including the roles of national human rights commissions, universal periodic reviews, shadow reporting, and special rapporteurs. We also pay attention to regional human rights mechanisms and how they can complement national-level efforts. A particular interest of ours is the relationship between human rights and development. The two fields have evolved independently but have converged considerably in recent decades, and understanding how they relate to each other helps development actors work with greater clarity and purpose. IDRAC supports this understanding through research, training, policy advisory work, and advocacy, with the aim of making rights-based approaches genuinely useful to the people and organisations we work with, rather than treating them as an add-on to existing practice.
